Importance of Newborn Safety During Photography Sessions

Newborn photography is a wonderful way to capture the innocence and beauty of your baby in their earliest days. However, it’s crucial to prioritize safety throughout the entire process. Your newborn’s fragile body requires special care and attention, especially during a photography session. It’s important for new parents to hire a photographer with extensive experience and training in newborn photography, and preferably certified in newborn safety through the Accredited Professional Newborn Photographer’s International. Also, be sure to read through and ask the Five Questions to Ask a Newborn Photographer Before Booking to ensure your baby is in the safest hands possible.

Due to the newborn’s delicate anatomy and the complicated posing process, only experienced and trained photographers should execute a froggy pose. Always remember that the safety and well-being of your newborn should never be compromised for the sake of a photograph.

Safety During Froggy Pose

Babies are incredibly fragile, and it’s important to remember this when posing them in these complicated poses. Their tiny airway is no bigger or sturdier than a plastic straw, and can become obstructed easily. This is why a photographer’s assistant should be constantly watching your baby – monitoring them for signs of stress or discomfort. The assistant is also their to support baby during posing and make sure they are always comfortable.

The Secret to Froggy Pose

Because it’s important for the photographer or their assistant to never leave baby unsupported, professional photographers must know how to work a little magic in photoshop to achieve froggy. Once baby is in position, the assistant supports baby’s wrists while the photographer captures the image. Once that image is captured, the assistant then moves their hand to the back of baby’s head. It’s important to note that the assistant should not be pushing down or pulling up on baby’s head while supporting in this pose; rather allowing the weight of baby’s head to rest on their hand. This ensures baby’s airway is always open and they are breathing normally and unrestricted.

Once both images are captured, the photographer can blend them together in photoshop to create that popular pose!

The Froggy Pose should always be done as a composite – with either the parents or photographer’s assistant providing an extra set of hands for support at all times. This is the only safe way to perform this pose.

    • Ashleigh Maxey says:

Thank you, Michelle! It’s so important to me that parents know what to look for and are educated on baby safety during the session!

  2. Carla Lehman says:

The behind the scenes is so important. I can remember a client telling me the photographer set this pose up, then walked away and made the shot without someone holding the baby in place, or even having a spotter. So dangerous. Thank you for educating parents and photographers on how to safely execute this pose.

    • Ashleigh Maxey says:

That is so scary, Carla! I cannot imagine leaving baby unattended in such a fragile state. I hope that parents are becoming more educated on this pose and the safety considerations for it!

  3. Brandi says:

I love that you are educating parents on how to safely achieve this pose. New parents don’t know what to look for and this is a great resource for them to be able to look at before their session. So many photographers don’t do this pose correctly and can put babies in danger!

    • Ashleigh Maxey says:

Thank you, Brandi! My goal is to educate more parents so babies aren’t injured in this pose! Unfortunately it does happen.

  4. Jodi Major says:
