It’s one of the most unique maternity photography locations in Oklahoma and the perfect setting for mothers who want something a little different for their portraits.

Recently, I had the privilege of photographing this gorgeous maternity session at the Oklahoma Salt Plains, and the results were absolutely stunning.

A Beautiful Evening at the Salt Flats

For this session, we arrived just before sunset to take advantage of the best light of the day. The sky was clear, the temperatures were comfortable, and the salt flats seemed to stretch endlessly toward the horizon.

As the evening progressed, the colors shifted from bright white to soft gold and eventually to shades of pink and lavender. Every few minutes the landscape seemed to transform into something entirely new.

Mom selected a beautiful flowing gown that moved effortlessly in the breeze, adding movement and elegance to her portraits. Against the bright white landscape, the fabric created a stunning contrast and helped emphasize the beauty of this season of motherhood.

One of my favorite parts of maternity photography is documenting the anticipation that comes before a baby arrives. There is something incredibly special about this chapter—equal parts excitement, wonder, and love. Sessions like this allow families to pause for a moment and celebrate everything that is about to change.

What to Wear for a Maternity Session at the Oklahoma Salt Plains

One of the most common questions I receive from expecting mothers is what they should wear for their maternity session.

The good news is that the Salt Plains pair beautifully with a wide variety of wardrobe choices. Soft neutrals, creams, dusty blues, muted pinks, and earth tones all photograph beautifully against the bright white landscape.

How Far Are the Oklahoma Salt Plains From Oklahoma City?

One of the reasons many families hesitate to consider the Salt Plains is because they assume the location is too far away.

The Oklahoma Salt Plains Wildlife Refuge is located near Jet, Oklahoma, approximately two and a half hours from Oklahoma City. While it does require a bit of travel, many clients find that the unique scenery is well worth the drive.

Because the location is so different from traditional Oklahoma landscapes, it often feels as though you’ve traveled much farther than you actually have.

For clients who want dramatic and unforgettable maternity portraits, the Salt Plains are easily one of my favorite locations in the state.
