Baby’s First Year Photos: Planning Beyond the Newborn Session

As an OKC photographer of over 8 years, I congratulate you on the arrival of your little bundle of joy! I often see clients returning for their baby’s first year of photos, as babies change so much over the first year of life, and documenting those changes is incredibly important.

Many parents choose the newborn session, but it’s also important to remember that baby will change a lot over the next year. Each milestone deserves to be cherished and preserved – from those first smiles and giggles to sitting up, crawling, and eventually taking those wobbly first steps. It’s so easy to document all of these sessions with Photos by Ashleigh, especially with my Baby’s First Year package.

WHEN TO PLAN BABY’S FIRST YEAR OF PHOTOS

During pregnancy, I recommend reserving your newborn session to ensure there is availability on the calendar near your due date. This will also give us enough time to plan the perfect newborn session. Once the baby is born, simply shoot me a text to let me know the good news and we will schedule your session!

However, when planning the milestone sessions, you can schedule them at your convenience. Once the baby reaches each milestone, you can open the booking calendar and schedule a milestone session for a date and time that suits your schedule! You have the option to either purchase these milestone sessions individually or by purchasing a Baby’s First Year package.

FIRST YEAR PHOTOS : TUMMY TIME SESSION

Babies typically start pushing up on their hands or elbows and holding their heads up around 4 or 5 months old, making it the perfect time to plan your first milestone session! During these sessions, babies are usually very smiley, happy, and social for the camera and they love having their photo taken. They may also start rolling over and interacting with their surroundings, which creates some very precious photographs!

FIRST YEAR PHOTOS : SITTER/STANDER SESSION

Babies between 8 and 9 months old will start sitting up without assistance or pulling up on furniture to stand. This milestone is such a fun moment to capture as they show their personalities and are always enjoyable. However, it’s worth mentioning that sometimes babies may experience a sense of “stranger danger” during this time, so don’t be surprised if your little one needs some time to warm up before they’re ready to have their photos taken.

FIRST BIRTHDAY

First birthday photos are definitely the most popular besides the newborn session! I love capturing updated family photos at the beginning of a session before moving on to photos of the birthday child alone. Many parents take this opportunity for cake smash photos (or other foods if you prefer). You can theme these photos to match your child’s birthday party or keep them sweet and simple with minimal props and decor.
