As a newborn and child photographer with over 8 years experience, one of the best experiences in the career is watching your newborn clients grow in front of your lens. I had such an opportunity when Elayne – one of my 2022 newborns – returned for her cake smash photos celebrating her first birthday.

This sassy little girl was just as sweet as the cake she dove into, and so much fun to capture! Elayne brought her mom Hannah and big sister Nora to her cake smash photos with her! Mom requested a lemon theme for her cake smash, harking back to her newborn photos. I think it tied them together perfectly!

Elayne’s Citrus Smash + Splash

For Elayne’s lemon-themed session, simplicity was the name of the game. We wanted Elayne’s bright personality to be the center of attention, with accents of lemon slices and greenery on a neutral background. To make things easier later, we started with some photos of Elayne all by herself before giving her an entire cake to smash – making sure to capture all of her sweet little features and details! Thankfully Elayne was in a fantastic mood and gave us so many adorable smiles!

After a few “before” photos, it was time to present Elayne with the cake! Mom said the cake was carefully made by a family member, and it turned out so adorable! It matched the lemon theme perfectly, and boy did it smell delicious too! Elayne wasted exactly zero time before diving in and eating frosting by the handfuls! Based on the photos, I’d say she enjoyed it!

Clean Up on Aisle ONE!

After her cake was sufficiently smashed and she had eaten herself into a sugar rush, it was time for clean up! I love making clean up just a tad easier on parents by offering a bath time set – a tub of warm water for baby to splash in and wash some cake off! These photos add variety to the finished gallery, give the parents some time to gather clean clothes and a fresh diaper and give more adorable smiles! They’re easily a favorite for parents and kiddos alike.
